Dec 5

Course Change! Legs 5 and 6 (and possibly Leg 4) will be changing for 2009. We have found a new route that will minimize the time a runner will be on US Hwy 287.

From the current Exchange 4, instead of turning west on Owl Canyon Road, runners will continue north on CR 17 to CR 80. At CR 80, runners will turn west. CR 80 has much less traffic and is quite scenic with a wonderful view of the Mummy Range in Rocky Mountain National Park. Exchange 5 will be at the entrance of the Park Creek Reservoir. In addition, traffic on Owl Canyon Road has increased to the point that Larimer County is discussing whether to pave the road in the future, so a new route makes even more sense.

Leg 6 will continue on CR 80 to US 287 where where runners only be on 287 be .8 miles to Red Feather Lakes Rd rather than the current 3.4 miles.

Here is a chart to show the changes - the distances for Legs 4 and 5 are a range as I'm going to look in to the possibility of moving Exchange 4 to even out the mileage distances a bit. Once this decision has been made, new maps will be created and uploaded to the website.

Leg 5

The new course will also increase the total mileage to 198.8 miles, up from 193.8. This will necessitate having the first wave start at 5:00 AM rather than at 5:30 AM as in past years. This will help achieve two goals - having all teams finish by 4:00 PM on Saturday, and to have all teams reach Exchange 15 before sunset.
