The reason for this chart is so you know what time the Exchanges are schedule to open and close. If you are arriving at exchanges before they open, it is because your team misrepresented their speed and as such, you were scheduled to start too early. Any team who finishes two hours faster than their projected finish time will be penalized two hours.
If you are falling behind and exchanges are going to close on you, you will be presented with options on how to continue. Most of the time, this becomes a problem in the second half of the race. The closing time is based on a pace of 10:30 min/mile for a team starting at 5:00. If your team is slower than this pace, you could run into problems. Or, if your team misrepresented their time and were scheduled to start too late, then you'll fall behind and exchanges will be closing. This problem will escalate as you continue, so it is better to get back in the pack early.
